Photographic portraits and narratives by Jeff Scheid and Erica Vital-Lazare feature African-American leaders in culture, politics, business and community outreach in “Obsidian & Neon: Building Black Life and Identity in Las Vegas.”

Originally, the exhibition was held in the Rotunda Gallery of the Clark County Government Building during Black History Month (2019).  In collaboration with Unrelenting Media, Inc., publishers of The Urban Voice, we have created this platform to further memorialize the exhibit.

Obsidian and Neon: is a pictorial-essay to be presented in a large-scale installation of black and white photography by long-time Las Vegas photojournalist Jeff Scheid. Scheid’s stunning photographic portraits are accompanied by profiles curated by writer and CSN professor Erica Vital-Lazare. This installation is an exploration and celebration of 20 community members who are actively mining identity, tending to and cultivating Black life in Las Vegas.
